Neuver Maritime is a global market leader in maritime maneuvering solutions, with particular expertise in the development and supply of steering gears and rudders for demanding operational conditions. With technology installed on over 14,000 vessels worldwide, the company builds on a proud Norwegian industrial heritage dating back to 1953. Its roots run through strong innovation environments such as Tenfjord, Frydenbø, Rolls-Royce and Kongsberg - and the legacy still characterizes the company's focus on quality, safety and reliability.
When Neuver was established as a separate, independent business, a clear need quickly emerged: structured, comprehensive and documentable training across employees, roles and global locations. For a fast-paced company, training isn't just about building skills - it's critical for safety, compliance and operational efficiency.
In order for employees to do their jobs safely and correctly, they need quick access to accurate and relevant information, presented in a way that works in a fast-paced environment.
XtraMile spoke to Stian Eik of Neuver, who has been instrumental in establishing the company's training structure.
Neuver needed more than a system for publishing courses. They needed a complete solution for onboarding, mandatory training and new internal requirements in an international organization with limited administrative resources.
The training had to be:
easy for employees to complete
easy tofollow up for managers
clearly documentable when needed
In addition, Neuver had to have full traceability of who has completed which courses - both compulsory training courses and role-based requirements for employees working on shipyards and vessels.
The needs gathered particularly around:
efficient and structured onboarding
simple and scalable training globally
clear overview and traceability
simple documentation
fast start-up, preferably supported by automated and AI-driven processes
Before the decision was made, Neuver conducted a systematic assessment of several alternatives. A clear list of "need to have" and "nice to have" requirements formed the basis for the choice. As a global player, the solution not only had to meet current needs, but also scale with the business.
Among the criteria that weighed most heavily were language support, user-friendliness, data security, price and integration options. Language became a decisive factor early on, as parts of the training must be offered in the native language in some countries.
Stian also emphasizes the importance of choosing a Norwegian and European solution - not least with regard to GDPR.
"It's important for us to know who processes our data and where it's actually stored. It's about both compliance and risk mitigation, but also about control over sensitive information."
Effective training and documentation are critical to operations
For Neuver, training and documentation are closely linked to operations, security and regulatory compliance. Multiple courses are necessary for employees in operational roles to be able to do their job - and the business must be able to document the status quickly upon request.
Course certificates can be a prerequisite for doing your job
Some courses apply to all employees, such as codes of conduct, whistleblowing and export control. Others are specific to technicians and support staff working on shipyards and vessels.
"In order to be allowed to enter a shipyard or board a vessel, some courses are required by law. They simply cannot gain access without them. At the same time, it's important for us that our employees return home safely after a day at work."
Separate training for employees in the field
Requirements vary between different assignments and countries. That's why Neuver has established its own "Certified to Operate" course series for employees working in the field. This ensures proper training before departure and provides a better overview of role-based requirements.
Documented training is crucial in audits
Training documentation is an important part of audits and ISO certifications. The company must be able to show:
Inadequate documentation can affect audit results, customer trust and - in the worst case - security.
Also important for policies and compliance
XtraMile is also used to make important policies easily accessible and to document that employees have read and completed them. This is particularly important in areas such as export control and ethical guidelines, where requirements are strict and documentation is crucial.
"It's about making the guidelines accessible - and at the same time ensuring documentation that they have actually been reviewed."
Several factors have enabled Neuver to succeed
For Neuver, value is not just about having a learning platform in place, but about the solution working well in practice. Several factors are highlighted as crucial to their success in a short space of time.
"I really enjoy working in a system that is so data-driven, with automatic mailings. In a hectic workday, that's gold."
"As soon as we got stuck, we got help on the day. All the input we have provided has been fixed and entered. That says a lot about the customer follow-up."
Results: high throughput and better overview
In a short space of time, Neuver has put in place structured and documentable training in a new global business. The result is a high completion rate on key courses, less manual follow-up work and a better overview of critical skills.
The results can be summarized as follows:
structured training established in a short time
High completion rate on key courses
less administration and easier follow-up
better overview and documentation of critical skills
