Needs and Objectives
NJFF wanted to modernise training for its volunteers and instructors—two large and highly diverse target groups with varying levels of digital experience.
The goal was to make training more flexible, accessible, and predictable. NJFF wanted to give new volunteers a strong introduction to the organisation while ensuring more efficient and consistent instructor training nationwide.
“For us, simplicity is the most important thing. Volunteers have busy lives, and training must fit into their schedules,” says Ragnhild Grøv of NJFF.
At the same time, NJFF needed a solution that was easy to administer, could be operated with limited internal resources, and was flexible enough to support both open and restricted courses.
In summary, NJFF wanted to:
-
Consolidate and digitise training for volunteers and instructors nationwide
-
Use a learning platform that could be managed with minimal internal resources
-
Provide a solution that is easy to use for end users—regardless of digital experience
The Solution – A Learning Platform That Is Easy to Manage
NJFF chose to implement XtraMile as its new learning platform.
Easy Administration with Limited Resources
Despite being a large and complex organisation, in practice a single person manages the entire learning ecosystem—including course production, updates, and distribution.
“XtraMile itself is not the challenge. The real work lies in the subject matter. The platform is simple, intuitive, and fast to work with. I get incredibly far as just one person,” says Grøv.
A key requirement for NJFF was the ability to update courses without changing links. Since hundreds of volunteers and all 19 regional units share course links further, stability is essential.
“It’s simple, intuitive, and very easy to make changes. That’s one of the things I appreciate most about XtraMile—how easy it is to adjust content along the way,” Grøv adds.
Volunteers and Instructors – High Engagement Across the Board
NJFF trains instructors across a wide range of disciplines. One common requirement is that all new instructors must complete the e-learning course Pedagogy and Communication, which was previously delivered in person. The course is now fully digital—providing better predictability, consistent quality, and significantly reduced time investment.
“The feedback on courses delivered via XtraMile has been extremely positive,” says Grøv. An internal evaluation showed that instructors reported:
- 97 % very satisfied or satisfied
- Over 90 % found the course engaging
- 100 % rated the content as relevant to their role
“The feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. Many say the course is a resource they return to—not something they just complete once.”
In 2025 alone, more than 300 new instructors completed the course, and several hundred others have finished subject-specific courses and updates via XtraMile—with very few technical issues.
Key to Success: Reaching More People—On Their Terms
NJFF has a volunteer base of nearly 5,000 people in various roles. Many spend little time in front of a computer, so training must be adapted to their everyday lives.
“Webinars require people to be available at a specific time. E-learning gives them freedom. If the content is good enough, they will complete it,” says Grøv.
Volunteers perceive the e-learning courses as practical and relevant, completing them when it suits them—not when the organisation dictates.
Grøv emphasises the importance of perceived value:
“Courses can easily feel like an unnecessary task. That’s why what we offer must be valuable and relevant.”
XtraMile – More Than a Platform, a Sparring Partner
For NJFF, the collaboration with XtraMile has been a key success factor.
“The support we receive in adapting the solution to our needs is extremely important. It’s a genuinely enjoyable tool to use, and we develop learning together,” says Grøv.
She also highlights the value of having experts at XtraMile to spar with:
“I like being in control of the platform myself, but having someone to discuss ideas with is incredibly important. It helps us continuously improve the learning experience for our members.”
Results
XtraMile has enabled NJFF to digitise and professionalise training across the entire organisation. The results are clear:
- Efficient digital training for nearly 5,000 volunteers and instructors
- 97% satisfied users
- High completion rates and low barriers to use—regardless of digital experience
- Minimal administration—one person manages the entire learning environment
- Strong collaboration and continuous development in partnership with XtraMile
- Volunteers and instructors reached “on their terms”
