Trident Aqua Services, a global shipping company delivering maritime services to the aquaculture industry, with more than 60 vessels and around 1,000 employees, has entered into an agreement with XtraMile as its new, complete learning platform. The goal is to strengthen training across the organization, streamline administration, and prepare the company for future requirements.

On this occasion, we spoke with Bjørn Ole Tysnes, Head of Training and Recruitment at Trident Aqua Services.

“We operate in an industry with increasingly high demands for the quality we deliver to our customers. Much of this is driven by regulatory requirements and legislation, but we also see a need for clearer internal procedures and more systematic competence development,” says Bjørn Ole Tysnes, Training & Recruitment Manager at Trident Aqua Services.

A Forward-Leaning Investment in AI Was Decisive

For Trident, it was particularly XtraMile’s integrated and forward-thinking use of AI that stood out during the evaluation process.

“XtraMile has come very far in its use of AI. This was one of the main reasons we chose XtraMile. It represents the future. AI is no longer a future project – it is a prerequisite for staying competitive in today’s market,” says Tysnes.

With XtraMile, Trident can quickly transform existing manuals, procedures, and operational experience into digital courses – whether as traditional e-learning, interactive modules, or more game-based formats. This enables faster production, improved quality assurance, and more engaging learning experiences.

“It will now be much easier to create courses. We can quickly develop a product that is 70–80 percent complete and then fine-tune it afterwards. It saves time and makes competence development more accessible to our employees,” he explains.

More Efficient Training and Less Manual Work

The investment in a complete learning platform is not only about quality and technology – it is primarily about making training more accessible, up to date, and easier to follow up across vessels and locations.

“We can now develop courses internally, in close collaboration with our subject-matter experts, and ensure that the content is updated and standardized without being dependent on external suppliers.

We no longer have to worry about new requirements, because we now have a system that helps us follow them up efficiently,” says Tysnes.

In addition, there is significant efficiency potential in administration and system integrations. The ambition is to consolidate training, course administration, and documentation in one platform and reduce manual processes.

“Creating a workflow that frees up time for our onshore employees is important. They can spend their time on more value-creating tasks instead of paperwork and manual registration of courses and certificates,” he says.

To Be Used for More Than Mandatory Training

Although mandatory training and compliance are key components of the initiative, the ambitions go beyond that. Trident aims to build a culture of continuous learning – not just meet minimum requirements.

“Some courses must be completed because they are mandatory. But we also want to encourage employees to take courses beyond the minimum requirements, to develop professionally and build competence that will be valuable going forward,” says Tysnes.

The vision is for learning to be easily accessible and relevant – even in short, available moments during the workday – and to be perceived as both useful and motivating.

A Global Organization Requiring Multiple Languages and Scalability

Trident Aqua Services operates globally, with activities in Norway, Chile, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, and the Faroe Islands. The first implementation in XtraMile includes around 400 seafarers in Norway, but the plan is to gradually roll out the solution across the organization.

“We hope to expand it into more languages over time, especially in South America. That is very interesting for us,” says Tysnes.

Language support and the ability to translate content quickly were therefore important factors in the decision-making process.

“It is always important for us that the systems we acquire are prepared for multiple languages. We operate internationally, so that is a prerequisite,” he emphasizes.

Preparing for Future Competence Needs

With XtraMile, Trident gains a modern, AI-driven learning platform that supports onboarding, mandatory training, certifications, and continuous competence development – all in one solution. The platform enables automation, integrations, and scalable use across countries and organizational levels.

However, the investment is about more than technology alone. It is about building a more robust and future-oriented organization.

“I believe we have only just begun to see the potential of AI and e-learning. There are so many possibilities – in reality, it is only imagination that sets the limits,” says Tysnes.
