The transportation company Nor-Log has chosen XtraMile as its unified learning platform. With this solution, the company is streamlining and improving training across the organization—and consolidating mandatory training, onboarding, skills development, and documentation in one place.

Nor-Log is a major nationwide transportation and logistics provider with approximately 1,000 employees, about 700 drivers, and an extensive fleet. This places high demands on effective training and the documentation of skills.

XtraMile spoke with the team behind this decision: Mona Aslaksen, Quality and Training Manager; Ivar T. Høgseth, IT Manager; and Nicklas Lundgren, HR and Quality Consultant—along with colleagues from the quality and HR departments in the regions.

The Goal: Less Administration and Better Control Over Training
Nor-Log has grown significantly, while requirements for training and documentation have increased. They describe a situation characterized by many manual processes. Previously, parts of course administration were handled through various systems, email, and Excel.

For courses with several hundred participants, this has entailed a great deal of manual work. Completion reports were received via email, recorded in Excel, and then entered into internal systems. With XtraMile, course production, distribution, delivery, and documentation are consolidated into a single solution.

“When you’ve received a response via email, recorded the completion in Excel, and then have to enter it manually—for several hundred people—it goes without saying that it becomes very demanding, says Mona.

The new learning platform makes it easier to conduct more training, while also giving Nor-Log a better overview and reducing administrative work.

On the choice of XtraMile: User-friendliness, quality, and more efficient course production
Before making a decision, Nor-Log evaluated several different learning platforms. User-friendliness, quality, efficient course production, and price were key criteria.

“We evaluated the quality of the systems, how easy it was to create courses, user-friendliness, and price, says Ivar.

An important part of the process was that Nor-Log gained access to XtraMile and was able to test the solution themselves. This gave the team the opportunity to try out the workflows in practice before making a decision.

“It made it easier for us to make a decision because we had access to the solution and could try it out ourselves—not just sit in a meeting and watch a demonstration, says Mona.

The course creation process itself also made a good impression. Nicklas had previous experience with a solution where building courses was time-consuming. In XtraMile, he found the process to be significantly simpler.

From static PDFs to course creation with AI
Nor-Log already has much of the subject matter that will be included in the training. This content is found, among other places, in manuals, PDFs, procedures, and customer requirements. With XtraMile’s AI-based course development, this material can be used directly as the foundation for new digital courses. This reduces the time it takes to go from existing documentation to a finished training program.

“We often already have the documentation for what we need to teach, whether in the form of manuals, PDFs, or specific customer requirements. During testing, it was easy to input this into the AI generator and get a finished course.” There was little need for editing afterward,” says Ivar.

For Nor-Log, this means that existing knowledge can be more quickly transformed into structured training and distributed to the employees who need it.

Consolidates and standardizes training across the organization
XtraMile will be used in several parts of Nor-Log. The common goal is to ensure that the right person receives the right training, while also allowing the company to document what has been completed.

👉 Structured Onboarding – And a More Professional Employee Experience
Nor-Log is implementing a unified structure for onboarding employees and apprentices. Previously, parts of the onboarding process relied on PowerPoint presentations and local procedures, resulting in variations across departments and managers.

With XtraMile, key parts of the training can be standardized across the entire organization. This gives new employees a more consistent introduction to the company, its safety requirements, and the way Nor-Log operates.

“With a solution like XtraMile, we can more easily demonstrate that we prioritize both safety and quality in the hiring process. This will help new employees feel better supported,” says Ivar.

A more structured onboarding process thus also contributes to how employees perceive Nor-Log as an employer.

👉 Easier to document and meet customer and regulatory requirements
The transportation industry places high demands on documented competence. For Nor-Log, this applies to both regulatory requirements and customer-specific requirements related to, among other things, safety, equipment use, procedures, and specific transport assignments.

“We need to be able to create effective and straightforward training programs, have documentation proving that the courses have been completed, and know who is required to take which courses. The demand for training—and especially documentation of completed training—is very high among our customers,” says Mona.

With XtraMile, Nor-Log can deliver the right training to defined target groups and document completion within the same system. This also applies to external suppliers and drivers who carry out assignments on behalf of the company. Documentation is particularly important for transport involving strict security requirements. Among other things, Nor-Log transports cargo that has been security-cleared by the shipper.

– We’re audited by customers, and we transport cargo that’s been security-cleared by the shipper. So we have to be able to document the training. If we can’t, it reflects negatively on us with both the Civil Aviation Authority and our customers, says Mona.

👉Cutting Costs Through More Systematic Training
For Nor-Log, the focus on competence is also about economics. The company handles high-value cargo and equipment, and mistakes can lead to damage, claims, and significant costs. More systematic training reduces the risk of errors related to, among other things, temperature settings, equipment, and work processes.

“Reduced costs resulting from skills development have been a key factor throughout the entire process, says Ivar.

Improved skills thus become a concrete tool for both reducing risk and avoiding unnecessary costs.

👉 Higher quality that customers will notice
Skill development will also contribute directly to the quality of the services Nor-Log provides.
Proper temperature control, correct scanning of cargo, and proper use of track-and-trace systems and handheld devices are examples of areas where employees’ skills have a direct impact on delivery.

“Our customers constantly evaluate us on quality. With the right training, we can, for example, reduce temperature-related damage to cargo because drivers know better what to do. These are things that customers notice right away, says Ivar.

Better and more systematic training thus contributes to both fewer errors and higher quality in day-to-day deliveries.

Make training accessible to drivers on the road
With around 700 drivers, the training must be accessible wherever the employees actually are. A large portion of the courses will therefore be completed on a smartphone or tablet during their daily work.

“About 90 percent of the courses will likely be taken on a smartphone,” says Nicklas.

At the same time, comprehensive language support makes the training accessible to employees with different language backgrounds, without Nor-Log having to develop separate courses from scratch.

A single platform provides better control over the entire training process
With XtraMile, Nor-Log gains a unified structure for training, competency, and documentation:

• Faster course production using AI and existing subject matter content.
• More effective mandatory training and follow-up.
• Structured onboarding of employees and apprentices.
• Documentation of regulatory and customer requirements.
• Mobile-friendly training for field employees.
• Training and documentation of external vendors and drivers.
• Improved skills that reduce errors, injuries, and costs.
• Higher quality and better control over skills.

XtraMile thus provides Nor-Log with a unified platform to scale training in line with the business—while simultaneously strengthening the company’s quality, documentation, and control over competency.
