Working Safely in and Around High-Voltage Installations

The FSE High-Voltage Course provides participants with the necessary knowledge to work safely on and near high-voltage electrical installations. The course is based on the Regulations on Safety in Work and Operation of Electrical Installations (FSE) and provides a practical introduction to the requirements governing planning, responsibilities, work methods, and safety measures.

Throughout the course, participants learn about roles and responsibilities in high-voltage installations, risk and safety distances, work methods specified in the FSE, grounding and short circuits, handling electrical accidents, and the proper use of personal protective equipment.

The course includes quizzes along the way and concludes with an exam.

The lessons in the course

1. Safety Starts Here
Introduction to the basic principles of safety in high-voltage installations and the importance of establishing necessary safety barriers.

2. Purpose and Legislation
Overview of the purpose of FSE, requirements for documented training, and key laws, regulations, norms, and standards governing work on electrical installations.

3. Roles and Access
Learn about key roles such as operations manager, safety manager (LFS), and switching manager (LFK), as well as requirements for access, safety cards, and safety distances in high-voltage installations.

4. Work Methods in Electrical Installations
An overview of the three work methods in FSE: work on de-energized installations, work near live parts, and work on live parts (AUS). The lesson also covers voltage testing, protection against re-energization, grounding, and short-circuiting.

5. Electrical Accidents and Procedures
What causes electrical accidents, how should they be handled, and what procedures apply to medical follow-up, notification, and reporting?

6. The Effects of Electricity on the Body
Learn how electric current affects the body and why high voltage can cause very serious injuries through, among other things, current penetration, arcing, flashover, and step voltage.

7. Planning and Risk Assessment
How to plan the work before starting, how to identify and assess risks, and how to select the correct work methods, personnel, and safety measures.

8. Protective Equipment and Arc Flash Hazards
Learn about the selection, inspection, and use of proper personal protective equipment, flame-retardant clothing, and the serious consequences that an arc flash can cause.

9. Exam
The course concludes with an exam that tests the participant’s understanding of key topics and safety principles covered in the course.

What You’ll Learn

After completing the course, you will have a better understanding of how to plan and carry out work on and near high-voltage installations safely. Among other things, you will learn:

  • the purpose of FSE and key regulatory requirements

  • the difference between high voltage and low voltage

  • roles and division of responsibilities in high-voltage installations

  • the roles of the operations manager, LFS, and LFK

  • requirements for access, safety cards, and safety distances

  • The three work methods in FSE: safe disconnection, voltage testing, and protection against re-energization

  • Requirements for grounding and short-circuiting

  • how work is planned and risk-assessed

  • how electricity and high voltage can affectthe body

  • how electrical accidents should be handled and reported

  • Requirements for and proper use of personal protective equipment

  • the hazards associated with electric arcs and working near live wires

Who is this course for?

This course is intended for individuals who work on, near, or need access to high-voltage electrical installations.

It is particularly relevant for personnel who, through their work, may be exposed to risks associated with high voltage and who need documented knowledge of safe work practices, risk assessment, and the requirements of the FSE.

The course is also relevant for individuals who will have roles or responsibilities related to the operation, switching, and safety of high-voltage installations.
