What is Adaptive Learning?

Adaptive Learning

Adaptive learning is a form of instruction in which the content, level of difficulty, or sequence is systematically adjusted based on the participant’s knowledge and performance. This adaptation is based on information gathered from assessments and assignments throughout the training. As a result, different participants can follow different learning paths and receive different levels of support while working toward the same goal.

Also known as: Adaptive instruction, personalized learning, individualized learning, tailored instruction.

Adaptation Based on Response

Adaptation can apply to which exercises the participant receives, how much explanation is displayed, or which topic will be covered next. A digital system uses rules or algorithms to make these choices. This differs from a traditional online course, where everyone sees the same content but sets their own pace.

Example: Adaptive learning

A course in a subject-specific system begins with a few exercises. An employee who has mastered the basic functions moves on to more challenging scenarios. Another employee receives additional explanations and practice exercises. Both are working toward the same learning objective but receive different levels of support along the way.
