What is Certification?
- Certification
Certification is a formal confirmation that a person, a product, or a business meets specific requirements. In an educational context, this often pertains to a person’s knowledge and skills. The requirements, the assessment, and who can issue the certification depend on the certification program.
An assessment against established requirements
Certification is linked to a program that describes requirements, assessment, and the issuing authority. In training, this may include exams, practical training, or other assessments of competence. A course certificate, on the other hand, indicates that a course has been completed or attended. It is the requirements and the assessment—not the design of a digital certificate—that determine what the certification entails. The issuing authority and validity depend on the specific scheme.
Example: Certification
A company requires a specific certification for a task. An employee completes preparatory training and is assessed according to the program’s requirements. Once the certification is issued, it is recorded in the competency overview. The course, the assessment, and the certificate describe different parts of the same process.
