What is Documentation of Competence?

Documentation of Competence

Competency documentation is information that substantiates a person’s knowledge, skills, or qualifications. It may include education, courses, certificates, and practical assessments. The documentation must be interpreted in the context of what has actually been assessed and the requirements the person must meet.

Also known as: Documentation of Qualifications

Different Types of Documentation

A trade certificate, a practical assessment, and a certificate of participation reveal different aspects of a person’s background. Registered participation does not necessarily indicate what the person has mastered. The significance of the documentation depends on what has been assessed, who issued it, and which competency requirements it is intended to address.

Example: Competency Documentation

An employee has a trade certificate, an external certificate, and internal approval for a work process. The organization compiles this information into a competency overview. When the documents are linked to role requirements, it becomes clear which qualifications are substantiated and where relevant documentation is missing. A lack of supporting documentation and a lack of skills can thus be distinguished from one another.
