What is A Competency Matrix?

A Competency Matrix

A competency matrix is a structured overview that links employees or roles to competencies and competency requirements. It can show skill levels, documented qualifications, or certification status. By comparing recorded competencies with the requirements, the organization can identify gaps and plan training or other follow-up measures.

How does a competency matrix work?

The matrix is typically a table with employees in the rows and competency areas in the columns. Each cell indicates a level or status. The entries may refer to practical proficiency, courses, or certifications. Clear explanations make it possible to distinguish between an activity that has been completed and a skill that has actually been assessed.

Example: Competency Matrix

A department needs more employees who can perform a specific work process. The matrix shows who works independently, who needs guidance, and who lacks training. The manager uses this overview to assign tasks and plan training. The matrix is updated when skills are reassessed.
