What is Equipment-Specific Training?

Equipment-Specific Training

Equipment-specific training is training in the safe use of the specific work equipment an employee is to use. It covers relevant functions, operation, and risk factors. The need for such training is assessed based on the equipment, the work tasks, and the employee’s skills, and may be provided in addition to other required safety training.

Training on the Specific Equipment

This term limits the training to the specific equipment that will actually be used, not just a general type of equipment. Differences in operation, functions, and risks may be significant. This introduction may be provided in addition to other safety training. “Documented training” refers to the record-keeping, while “equipment-specific training” describes the content of the training.

Example: Equipment-specific

An employee is familiar with one type of machine but will be using a different model. A professional reviews the relevant differences in operation and provides practical guidance. The company records which equipment the training covered and what was reviewed. The example illustrates the link between specific equipment and documented completion.
