What is Game-Based Learning?

Game-Based Learning

Game-based learning is a form of learning in which participants acquire or apply knowledge through a game. The game’s rules, challenges, and feedback are linked to the learning objectives. The activity can be digital or physical, individual, or conducted in groups. The subject-specific application is an integral part of the game.

The Game as a Learning Activity

The game provides the framework for the tasks, and the participants’ choices have consequences within the game. This differs from gamification, where points or badges are added to another activity. The learning lies in the application of knowledge and reflection on the outcome, not just in the competition or entertainment.

Example: Game-Based Training

A team resolves a fictional operational scenario by prioritizing information and selecting actions. The game illustrates the consequences of those choices. Afterward, participants discuss the results with an instructor and relate them to the organization’s procedures. The game and the debriefing provide a shared framework for examining professional judgments.
