What is Gamification?

Gamification

Gamification is the use of game elements in activities that are not inherently games. In training, these can include points, levels, badges, or challenges. These elements are used to provide feedback, highlight progress, and encourage active participation in a course or learning path.

The Difference from Game-Based Learning

In gamification, game elements are added to an activity that remains a course, an assignment, or a learning path. In game-based learning, the game itself serves as the framework for learning. Points and badges can indicate progress, but they do not, on their own, reveal what the participant has understood or is able to apply. .

Example: Gamification

New employees complete short assignments in an introductory course and unlock the next level once the tasks are completed. A badge indicates a completed section, while feedback explains the choices. It is still an introductory course, but the game elements make progress visible and provide the participant with clear milestones. The course itself is still not a complete game.
