What is LMS – Learning Management System?

LMS – Learning Management System

An LMS, short for Learning Management System, is software used to organize, deliver, and track training. The system brings together courses, participants, and completion data. In the workplace, an LMS is used for purposes such as onboarding, mandatory training, and skills development across roles and locations.

Also known as Learning Management System; LMS system; LMS platform

What does a learning management system (LMS) do?

An LMS can manage course assignments, access rights, deadlines, and completion reports. Some solutions also include a course builder or support for hands-on activities. “Learning platform” is a broader term often used to refer to an LMS. “Course portal” and “course platform” may refer to more specific functions and are not always synonymous.

Example: LMS

A company consolidates introductory courses and mandatory training into a single LMS. New employees receive content relevant to their role, while managers can view completion status and remaining activities. The platform organizes the training; the actual learning takes place through course content, assignments, and on-the-job follow-up.
