What is Nano-learning?
- Nano-learning
Nano-learning is a term for very short learning segments that focus on a single message or action. It can be a single question, a short clip, or a reminder. The term is used in somewhat different ways, and there is no universal time limit that defines the format.
- Also known as: Nanolearning; Nano learning
The Relationship to Microlearning
Both formats break learning down into small units. Nanolearning is often used to describe the very shortest segments, while microlearning can include more explanation and more exercises. The distinction is not a fixed technical standard. A short nugget of content can reinforce knowledge from a course without replacing the more comprehensive foundational training.
Example: Nanolearning
After a course on suspicious emails, employees are presented with a short question featuring a fictional message. They select an answer and view an explanation. A later lesson addresses another type of message. Each activity reinforces a small portion of the knowledge from the course.
