What is Preboarding?
- Preboarding
Preboarding refers to the period and activities between accepting a job offer or signing an employment contract and the first day of work. The purpose is to prepare the new hire and the company for the start of employment. Preboarding is the early part of the onboarding process, while onboarding encompasses the broader introduction to the role.
The Period Before the First Day of Work
Preboarding is defined by its timing: these activities take place before the employee starts work. Information about the workplace and points of contact, a welcome message, and practical details are common examples. It is an early part of the onboarding process, not synonymous with the entire onboarding process. Further training in the role continues after the employee has started.
Example: Preboarding
One week before the start date, a new colleague receives a welcome message and the schedule for the first day. The manager is available to answer practical questions, and the company prepares the necessary equipment. When the employee starts, this information is linked to the rest of the onboarding process, which includes training, assignments, and follow-up. The contact before the start date is preboarding; the onboarding process continues through the onboarding phase.
