What is Skills Gap?

Skills Gap

A skills gap is the difference between the skills an employee or organization possesses and the skills required to perform specific tasks. The gap may relate to knowledge, practical skills, or qualifications. It can arise in current work or when new tasks and requirements are introduced.

Also known as: Skills gap

Competence and Documentation

The gap arises when comparing a need with what a person or group is actually capable of doing. This may apply to only parts of a work task. A lack of documentation does not automatically mean a lack of competence, and completing a course is not, in and of itself, proof that all relevant skills are in place.

Example: Competency Gap

A team is set to use a new reporting tool. Several team members have mastered the basic functions but need training in interpreting the results. The assessment shows that the need pertains to analysis, not the entire system. The competency gap is thus narrowed down to specific skills that further training can target.
