What is Competency assessment?
- Competency assessment
Competency assessment is the process of identifying and evaluating employees’ knowledge, skills, and qualifications. The assessment can be conducted for an individual, a department, or the entire organization. The results are compared with needs and requirements to provide a basis for training, development, and staffing.
Assessment and Competency Matrix
The assessment is the survey itself; a competency matrix is a way to present the results. Interviews, self-assessments, knowledge tests, and observations can shed light on different aspects of competency. Common assessment criteria make the data comparable. The results can then be compared against the requirements of a role or work process. The assessment can be updated when tasks or competencies change.
Example: Competency Assessment
A manager investigates which product types each employee can troubleshoot independently. Interviews are combined with evaluations of practical tasks. The results are compiled into a matrix that shows who has mastered various tasks, who needs guidance, and where the team needs more training.
