What is Competency Management?

Competency Management

Competency management is the systematic process of ensuring that the organization has the competencies it needs. It involves identifying needs, assessing existing competencies, prioritizing actions, and monitoring results. This process links employee development to tasks, risks, and the organization’s goals over time.

A Comprehensive Approach to Competency Management

Competency management links assessment, development, and documentation. Competency assessment examines what employees can do, while a competency matrix shows their current status. Management also encompasses priorities, responsibilities, and the selection of measures. It is therefore about more than just administering courses or registering existing certifications in a system. Recruitment and changes in task allocation may also be part of the measures.

Example: Competency Management

A company is set to implement a new production system. It identifies the competency needs, assesses the employees, and plans training. After hands-on training, an evaluation is conducted to determine whether the tasks are being mastered. The results are used to adjust staffing and plan further measures. This comprehensive process is competency management.
