What is Competency Requirements?
- Competency Requirements
Competency requirements are descriptions of what a person must know, be able to do, or document in order to perform a task or fulfill a role. These requirements may stem from regulations, agreements, or the organization’s own needs. They provide a basis for assessment, training, and evaluation.
Requirements Related to Roles and Responsibilities
The requirements describe the expected level, not the skills the person already possesses. They may pertain to practical proficiency, professional knowledge, or formal qualifications. A course can be one way to meet a requirement, but the course title alone does not always describe what the employee is expected to be able to do or document. .
Example: Competency Requirements
A customer service representative must be able to use a specialized system and process customer information in accordance with internal procedures. A practical task demonstrates system proficiency, while an assessment of simulated customer inquiries demonstrates understanding of the procedures. The competency requirements provide the framework for the assessment and for any further training. The requirements describe the expectations, while the assessment shows the employee’s current level.
