What is Reskilling?

Reskilling

Reskilling is the process of developing new skills in order to perform different job tasks or transition into a different role. The term is often used to refer to retraining when technology, organizational changes, or business needs alter the nature of the work. The training is based on the employee’s existing skills and the requirements of the new role.

The Difference Between Reskilling and Upskilling

Reskilling involves a change in tasks or role. Upskilling typically involves building on the skills required for the employee’s current role. Both are part of professional development. A development path may include both, because some of the employee’s experience is carried forward while other skills need to be developed.

Example: Reskilling

An employee in order processing is moving into a role involving the analysis of customer data. System training is combined with mentoring and tasks related to the new role. The employee’s knowledge of customers remains relevant, while the analytical work requires new skills. The training is tailored to this shift in function.
